Make24 / Guide

The 24 game for the classroom.

Put four numbers on the board and ask pupils to make 24. They can work on their own or in pairs, then compare their steps.

Explain the rules

  • Use each of the four numbers exactly once.
  • Add, subtract, multiply or divide in any order.
  • Division must give a whole number.

Ask pupils to write down each move. Two pupils might reach 24 in completely different ways.

Talk through a solution

Once someone has an answer, ask:

  • Why did you choose that first pair?
  • Can you find another way to make 24?
  • Can you solve this one without division?

Print a practice sheet

These twelve puzzles all have a solution. Leave room for pupils to show their working.

Set each other a puzzle

Ask pupils to choose four numbers and find a solution before swapping with a partner. They’ll have an answer ready to check against, though their partner might find another.
